Helmet - Choose a helmet where you can see when your head is down and make sure the face mask is strong.
Saddles - Must be English (No Western) Jumping Saddles sit too far back for Polo and the Stirrup hangers are too far forward. The Girth Strap on Polo Saddles and the Stirrup Straps are set further back.
Breaches or Jeans - As long as they are white.
Chaps - Optional - but they do protect you from horse sweating and boot protection.
Spurs - Your choice and optional.
Boots - English or Western - your choice. Knee Guards' Ribbed or Plain - yes - you may need them.
Ourrts - (Whip) Optional.
Mallets - Your choice - Remember, your horse size and your reach are important.
Polo Player and Equipment
Polo Player - Players are rated from - 2 to 10 goals. Minus 2 is a beginner and 10 goals represents the best in the world.
Polo Whip - Used from time to time in long runs down field.
Draw Reins - Pulley design from head to girth allows the player more control in steering the pony.
Polo Breeches - Regulation White Polo Breeches - double-seated traditional and functional for polo.
Knee Pads - Provides player's knees protection from bumps and balls.
Polo Riding Boots - Provides additional protection for the player's lower leg.
Helmet - Hard surface lined and strapped, the helmet provides its wearer maximum protection against spills and swinging mallets.
Mallet - Made of bamboo cane with hardwood head. Head beveled on one end to allow for full swing flush to the ground. Mallet shaft is highly flexible and can make a complete arc under the pony's neck or tail when swung hard. Mallets range in length from 48 to 54 inches to accommodate the player's swing and size of the pony.
Polo Pony and Equipment
Polo Pony - May be a thoroughbred or part thoroughbred, part quarter horse. Selected for their agility, speed, endurance and intelligence.
Clipped Mane - Eliminates interference of pony's mane with the player's rein hand.
Polo Saddle - Leather construction with stirrups. Differs from jumping saddle, which has extra pads, and from the western saddle's horn mount.
Braided Tail - Allows less interference with swinging mallets.
Bandages - Protective wraps used for support.
Breast Plate - Used to secure the saddle forward.
Polo Martingale - Used to inhibit the horse's head from raising up and hitting the rider.
Bridle - This series of strapping and supports gives the player the ability to steer and stop the pony.
